The UP Senate will accept the proposal to conduct an online defense

Panjab University (PU) students may soon be allowed to attend the defense remotely via online methods as the university senate will take a final call on the matter at its next meeting scheduled for April 26.

The UP senate, the university’s supreme governing body, should consider the need (or lack thereof) for a candidate to be physically present at the time of the defense during the pandemic in course or in similar extraordinary situations in the future.

The PU union in March 2020 had decided to add the provision of viva via skype into the existing regulations subject to it being used sparingly in emerging or exceptional circumstances and only with the approval of the Vice Chancellor (VC). According to the decision, examiners were allowed to participate remotely, but the physical presence of the candidate was required.

At that time, the union had, however, postponed the issue of allowing candidates to attend the defense remotely and it will again be submitted to the university senate.

The UP Senate will meet on April 26 with two agenda items for consideration, four items for ratification and 20 items for information.

Separate entity for the operation of the multipurpose auditorium

The senate, when meeting, will also consider establishing a separate entity (a company under section (8) of the Companies Act 2013) for the operation and maintenance of the multi-purpose auditorium complex of sector 25, in accordance with the recommendations of a Committee.

The committee set up to develop the revenue model for the multi-purpose hall in 2020 had recommended that after the creation of the company, the whole should be leased by PU to the proposed new entity on an annual lease amount to be decided by the syndicate of from time to time.

“The proposed entity must ensure the generation of adequate resources from the multi-purpose auditorium complex to meet not only recurrent expenditures, but also the generation of surpluses to support future development needs,” said resolved the committee.

The senate will also make the final decision on the creation of the senate room in the auditorium. The proposal has already been ratified by VC Raj Kumar as per the authorization given by the Senate.
