Playing online games is just as effective as exercising for weight loss, experts say

People who play video games for two hours can lose the same number of calories as doing 1,000 sit-ups, according to the latest research.

A new study, conducted by the Stakester gaming app, found that male gamers can lose up to 420 calories in a two-hour gaming session, while female gamers can burn up to 472 calories.

During the trial, the team of academics evaluated 50 people for two hours while playing a video game to examine how many calories they burned and how it affected their heart rate.

Additionally, the researchers performed the same analysis when participants performed 1,000 sit-ups.

According to the results, male participants typically lost 210 calories per hour when playing games virtually, while female participants lost 236 calories.

Previous research on the BMI of esports gamers has found that online gamers are normally healthier than non-gamers due to specific video games making them more active.

Additionally, previous research has identified that gamers do not smoke and drink as much as non-gamers.

Lead author of a previous research study, Michael Trotter, said: “The findings challenge the stereotype of the morbidly obese gamer.

“When you think of esports, concerns are often raised about sedentary behavior and the resulting poor health, and the study found interesting and mixed results.”

Tom Fairey, CEO and Founder of Stakester said: “We all know competition increases our heart rate and most of us have experienced the ‘game sweat’ that occurs when looking for a last minute goal in the game. FIFA or a tight spot in Warzone.

“It’s no surprise that it burns calories, but we’re surprised how many calories are burned in a 2 hour session, it’s definitely better than 1000 crunches.”

At the very least, it challenges the stereotype of a typical gamer.
