The Zoos SA online auction has a huge fundraising goal: hippos!
It is Zoos SA’s hope that the waterholes in the soon-to-open Wild Africa safari zone will become home to a host of burly herbivores.
“Many South Australians will have fond memories of seeing the Brutus and Susie hippos at Adelaide Zoo. Now we want to introduce this incredible species to Monarto Safari Park where they will roam and graze the plains as well as wallow in water points,” said CE of Zoos SA, Elaine Bensted.
“We hope the hippo housing at Monarto Safari Park will continue the story that Brutus and Susie helped us start – the story of the vulnerable Nile hippo.
“This is where we will inspire old and new generations to love this species and invest in their long-term survival.”
The online auction, which features a new release of items today and runs through World Hippo Day (February 15), features unique experiences, luxury dining packages, artwork animals and exclusive items. This will help Zoos SA raise much needed funds to secure the hippos.
“Seeing hippos on the horizon at Monarto Safari Park is no small feat, we will need additional staff and building facilities to accommodate these large herbivores,” Elaine said.
The auction includes the launch of a specially crafted botanical gin by the Hahndorf company Ambleside Distillers.
Named Kiboko, which means hippopotamus in Swahili, the gin features Passion Berry, Muntries, Tanami Apple and Rosella picked from the bush garden at Monarto Safari Park and complemented with locally grown pomegranate and citrus.
“We have supported Zoos SA for several years,” said Trudy Dickson of Ambleside Distillers.
“We recognize the importance of supporting conservation and have previously produced Kifaru (which means rhinoceros in Swahili) gin featuring botanicals from Monarto Safari Park. We often get requests for limited release Kifaru Gin and a few of them will be available as well,” Trudy concluded.
The Ambleside Auction VIP package includes a private signing of a bottle of Ambleside’s new Kiboko gin, an exclusive tour of the Still Room, a gin and tonic and food package for two adults worth £100 $ and a family pass to Monarto Safari Park.
For those who do not win the item at the Ambleside auction, a limited edition of 300 bottles of Kiboko gin will be exclusively available at the Ambleside Tasting Bar in Hahndorf (from the end of March). All proceeds from Kiboko sales will go to Zoo SA.
Other items from the second wave of the auction include tickets to see Crowded House, Adelaide Oval accommodation, Kaesler Wine, Seppelt Para Liqueur, a Koala painting, Alpha H skincare, wine and experiences with animals.
