Haven Studios PS5-Exclusive is an online games title as a service

Jade Raymond’s Haven Studios PS5-exclusive game is rumored to be a “Games as a Service” (or GaaS) online title. The rumor comes from an anonymous source from the Italian outlet Multiplayer.it, allegedly a message from a recruiter working on behalf of Sony to be hired for the developer. However, the rumor comes with many caveats that require a few grains of salt to be digested. On the one hand, this is obvious information to deduce from what we know. On the other hand, the rumor comes from a source that has not yet been validated.

The message Multiplayer.it got was reportedly sent to them by a contact “in the world of triple A game development” who got it from a recruiter, so it’s already washed up through multiple channels at this point. The message is below, with the role for which the hiring is removed at some point in the contact chain in order to protect the identity of the recruiter and developer to whom the recruiting message was sent.

I work for Haven Games, a Montreal studio funded by Sony and run by Jade Raymond, to which we owe franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Watch Dogs.

He seeks to add a [developer role] to the team to help them develop an original intellectual property: a GaaS Online exclusive to Sony.

However, there are a few curious things about this alleged message that stand out. The recruiter’s post calls the studio “Haven Games”, although the developer’s name so far is still “Have Studios” or just “Haven”. The post also appears to refer to Jade Raymond as “he” and the wording “a Sony exclusive online GaaS” is a rather odd wording. It is certainly possible that some of this gets lost in the translation somewhere along the way (it is not known in which language the original recruiting message was sent before it was provided to Multiplayer.it, which the published in Italian, which was then translated into English by us).

If the above post is true, it doesn’t speak to the scale of Haven Studios’ alleged GaaS aspects of the game. There are countless games these days that have both online and “service” components, from full on-going multiplayer games to regular single-player adventure updates. Games-as-a-Service is broad terminology that could apply to virtually any ongoing content plan that involves updating and adding to the game after release in any way, and this could have been highlighted specifically in this recruiting post as this is the role that was being hired for.

We already know that Haven Studios’ game will be multiplayer thanks to the job postings we saw last month, which already almost confirms a GaaS aspect. If Sony is helping Haven launch a multiplayer game, they’ll want to have a long-term content plan and a roadmap for monetization. It’s just smart business. It would honestly be more surprising if they made a multiplayer game that didn’t have a “service” aspect attached.

Jade Raymond founded Haven Studios after her Stadia team disappeared. The developer is working with Sony on a PS5-exclusive title – an original IP address – and has picked up industry talent from various locations, including others she had worked with at Stadia.

There are currently no release windows or additional official news about the game outside of Haven Studios.
