FSIS issues public health alert for summer sausage products due to possible foreign material contamination

WASHINGTON, December 18, 2021 – The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture is issuing a public health alert regarding approximately 51 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) summer sausages from Hawaiian style due to concerns the products may be contaminated with foreign matter, especially pieces of metal. FSIS is issuing this public health alert with the utmost caution to ensure that consumers are aware that these products should not be consumed. A recall has not been requested as the products are believed to be no longer available to consumers.

The RTE Hawaiian-style summer sausage items for this public health alert were produced by Swiss Processing Plant, Inc. on November 18, 2021. The following products subject to public health alert are [view labels]:

  • 8 oz chop container RTE Swiss Meat & Sausage Co. HAWAIIAN SUMMER SAUSAGE with the “MADE ON” date of 111821, located on the left or right edge of the package.

The products affected by the recall bear the establishment number “EST. 2969 “inside the USDA inspection mark. Products were sold at the Swiss Processing Plant, Inc. retail store and at a local winery in Hermann, Missouri.

The issue was discovered when a facility employee noticed metal in product purchased from the company’s store, prompting the facility to investigate and report their findings to FSIS.

There have been no confirmed reports of side effects from the consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a health care provider.

FSIS is concerned the product may be in consumer pantries or refrigerators. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products must be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.
