As the manager of the Syracuse University men’s basketball team, Hunter Pomerantz used to take care of the players’ equipment, going a little blind to his stillness in the locker room.

But these days, those same jerseys, sneakers and sweatbands worn by the game smell of money.

That’s because Pomerantz has teamed up with his brother Austin, his roommate Jason Lansing, both co-managers of the University of Michigan men’s basketball team and two of the former college basketball stars. from school to a business called The Players Trunk, an online portal that sells the equipment of former college athletes.

“These are stuff you can’t buy anywhere else, like jerseys and shorts used for the game,” says Hunter Pomerantz, who lives in Old Westbury. “They are not always washed, because things like blood stains add value.”

The idea for the business came when Charles Matthews, former top shooting guard for the Michigan Wolverines, began selling some of his sports gear through his personal Instagram account. The managers on his team believed there had to be a more effective method of reaching potential customers and The Players Trunk was born.

“Jason and I helped him out, but we knew there had to be a better way,” said Austin Pomerantz.

So, this summer, Matthews, his former Michigan teammate Xavier Simpson, Lansing and the Pomerantz brothers launched the online business, with the goal of helping former varsity athletes make money, which is what it is for them. forbidden to do while still in school.

The way it works, athletes send their equipment to The Players Trunk to be marketed and sold on the website, for which the company takes a small percentage of sales while most of the revenue goes to the players.

Pomerantz said taking care of equipment is nothing new for team leaders.

“In addition to helping with passing, rebounding and shooting drills on the pitch, we need to get the equipment out, put it in their lockers and get it ready for practice,” Pomerantz said. “We were all pretty comfortable with it.”

The most popular items offered by The Players Trunk are team sneakers with logos and training jerseys. Prices start between $ 10 and $ 15 for things like shooting sleeves, sweatbands, and socks. The most expensive item on the website: A black folding chair from the 2018 NCAA Final Four championship game that Matthews has sat on and is signed by Michigan roster and coaches, which is being offered for $ 20,000.

Since its inception in July, The Players Trunk has grown to feature autograph videos of former players and autographed photos. The company, which now offers equipment from dozens of colleges and universities, recently branched out to add female college sports athletes.

“It allows players to have some autonomy and take control of their own brands,” said Austin Pomerantz. “They put fans in the seats, so they should be compensated.”

Matthews, who will likely head to an NBA team after recovering from an ACL tear he suffered last year, said it was refreshing to see former athletes being able to capitalize on all their hard work.

“Especially those who don’t have a professional career,” Matthews told LIBN. “They have generated billions of dollars for these universities and there is still a market for them.”

When you think of professional wrestling, Kirito is unlikely to Sword art online comes to mind. The hero may be a shonen icon to millions of people, but he has very little to do with the ring. Well, that’s until Kenny Omega dragged Kirito into AEW last night.

Yes, it’s true. The pro wrestling star decided it was time to channel her inner Kirito last night. Omega was brought in for a main event match with Chris Jericho, and AEW fans were eager to see his entry. After all, Jericho went big with nostalgia for his early days, but Omega took a different path.

As you can see below, Omega was seen heading to the match in a familiar cloak. The clothes come straight from Sword art online, and the fans had to do a double look to make sure they got it right.

The look isn’t quite the same, but the inspiration is clear. Omega wears a leather jacket with a torn sleeve, and its black material is lined with thick white lines. The open jacket is then connected by a three-point strap with a unique locking mechanism resting on its chest. This little curl comes straight from Kirito’s famous anime outfit, but Omega took some liberties by cutting the duster short and removing a full sleeve.

After all, Omega can’t have his muscles hampered if he takes on Jericho, and no round will hold him back.

Sadly, Omega didn’t come out of the AEW game in the lead, but fans of Sword art online were still happy to see him scream their favorite VRMMORPG player.

So, have you seen the wrestler’s tribute to Kirito? Let me know in the comments or hit me up on Twitter @Megan PetersCB to talk about all things comics and cartoons!

Sword art online was originally created by Reki Kawahara with artwork provided by abec for ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Bunko line in 2009. The series follows a boy named Kirito after he and thousands of gamers find themselves trapped in a virtual reality video game known as Sword Art Online. Players must unite to defeat the final level of the game to escape, but Kirito and his guild learn that there is more behind their prison than they were originally told.

A little over a week after the launch of Walmart’s new Premium Outdoor Store – a collaboration with subsidiary Moosejaw, the online outdoor retailer – Black Diamond, Deuter, Katadyn, Leki and Therm-a-Rest have removed their equipment from the site.

The saga began on Monday, August 27, when Walmart unveiled a new section of its website offering a collection of premium outdoor gear curated by Moosejaw. Showcasing products from brands like Black Diamond, Leatherman, Pelican, and Therm-a-Rest, the store marked a distinct change from Walmart’s mainstay of low-end, budget camping gear. The next day, Black Diamond issued a cease-and-desist order, directing the Arkansas-based company to remove the gearmaker’s logo and product photos. “We did not see or approve the statement Walmart released on Monday and never sold to Walmart,” Black Diamond President John Walbrecht said. a press release announcing the action, who went on to state that Black Diamond has no association with the Premium Outdoor Store.

Three days later, Deuter announced that he would be stepping down, after “a first trial arrangement” on the platform. “While we appreciate the concept of what Moosejaw is trying to accomplish with this new initiative, we have decided now is not a good time to participate,” said Bill Hartrampf, president of Deuter USA, in a statement from hurry. On the same day, Therm-a-Rest contacted Outside with news that he was also pulling his gear from the new Walmart store. “We remain nimble to change and pivot our business for our brand’s greatest success with fans, consumers and trusted business partners; hence our decision to move away from Walmart’s outdoor store, ”the company said in a statement.

Both Deuter and Katadyn say that Moosejaw started mentioning the idea of an equipment-focused online retail platform working with Walmart shortly after it was purchased by the hypermarket in 2017, and that formal conversations have started this summer at Outdoor Retailer. Hartrampf says Moosejaw presented a slideshow, presenting the new store as a closed environment within the Walmart site, with all of the high-end brands listed together. “The concept made sense,” says Hartrampf. “We would be exposing our brand in an upscale store to a new and diverse consumer group. Katadyn President Shawn Hostetter also cites the trust built over many years of working with Moosejaw and the broad reach of the new platform as the driving forces behind his decision to sign. Leki echoed this sentiment in a press release.

What differentiates Walmart’s Premium Outdoor Store from Amazon, for example, is the promise of greater oversight regarding third-party vendors allowed to sell their products on the platform. Pushed to compete with each other for the cheapest listing, which sites like Amazon show first in search results, these sellers are known to violate the minimum advertised price (MAP) that brands set for their products. products. Amazon is notoriously lax about shutting down sellers that undermine a brand’s MAP. “It’s kind of like a mole game, with sellers showing up on third-party platforms and not adhering to our minimum advertised price policies,” says Hostetter. Katadyn had worked with Moosejaw for years before Moosejaw was bought by Walmart in 2017. Moosejaw had always followed Katadyn’s MAP and promised to continue to do so in the new Walmart store. Hartrampf says it has received similar assurances.

So what happened to make these equipment companies give up so quickly? According to Rich Hill, president of the Popular outdoor alliance, many of those who signed up did so with the impression that the Premium Outdoor Store would be different from the rest of the Walmart site, and it didn’t turn out to be the case. But others, including Deuter and Katadyn, say they knew what they were getting themselves into and withdrew under pressure from specialist retail partners.

Within hours of the launch, store owners began suspending orders from businesses selling through Walmart.com. “We knew there would be reluctance on the part of some retailers,” says Hartrampf, “but it was much stronger than expected. Their main concern was the image that the Walmart name gives to the brands it offers, given its budget reputation. A high-end product listed on Walmart.com suddenly looks a little less premium. The credibility of specialty retailers relies on the perception that they offer the best products, so damage to a product’s premium status hurts. (Some respected outdoor brands, like Camp Chef, Coleman, and Sawyer, were sold on the Walmart site before the Premium Outdoor Store launched and are still available from specialty retailers like REI.)

“I wasn’t naive enough to think that all outdoor retailers would welcome the Premium Outdoor Store with open arms,” Moosejaw CEO Eoin Commerford wrote in a comment. open letter published Friday morning. “But I am surprised by the vehemence of the attacks from some of the major retailers in our industry and the threats to drop the brands that participated in them.” Commerford says that Moosejaw and Walmart’s primary goal was to promote inclusiveness by exhibiting “outdoor brands, activities and products to a wide audience of new and long-time outdoor enthusiasts, including very groups that are under-represented in our industry today ”. Walmart commented for Outside“The decision to be a part of this new experience will continue to belong to every brand, and our hope is that brands, and even other retailers, share our commitment to driving a truly inclusive outdoor industry,” but he said. declined to comment for this story.

Ultimately, Hill sees the Premium Outdoor Store as a first step in a brewing war between Amazon and Walmart. “I think the main beneficiary of this launch has been the Walmart team tasked with developing a strategy to fight Amazon,” he said. Whether or not Walmart is trying to pull some of Jeff Bezos’ business – and what the fallout might be for outdoor businesses, retailers, and customers – it’s far too early to tell. In the meantime, says Hill, “all retailers can do is walk away from brands that are embroiled in a price war between the world’s two largest retailers. “

Your next high-end tent, headlamp, or puffy coat could be from Walmart. On Monday, the retail conglomerate added a new hardware store on its website, selling everything from clothing and camping gear to climbing harnesses and crampons. No, Walmart, known for its inexpensive product offerings, does not make private label equipment in an attempt to undermine established outdoor businesses, like they have with organic food. He sells full-price gear from industry stalwarts Black Diamond, Deuter, Therm-a-Rest, Pacsafe, and Eddie Bauer.

Premium Outdoor Store is a collaboration between Walmart and Moosejaw, the online equipment retailer that Walmart acquired for $ 51 million in 2017. Moosejaw is organizing the equipment that Walmart sells on its new platform, some of which are already available on Moosejaw.com, from other other brands that Moosejaw does not sell. to sell. The goal is to offer “a whole new assortment of outdoor specialties that was not available to Walmart customers in the past,” wrote Eoin Comerford, CEO of Moosejaw and general manager of e-commerce for the division. outdoor from Walmart, in an earlier blog post. today. Walmart has been selling camping gear for years, but is known for its inexpensive entry-level products.

The managers of Premium Outdoor Shop are aware of this reputation and are making efforts to ensure that the new platform sends a different message. “We pay special attention to maintaining the look and feel of each brand,” says Jaeme Laczkowski, director of corporate communications at Walmart. To do this, Walmart relies heavily on Moosejaw’s expertise and strong business relationships to ensure products are accurately described and represented online.

Over time, Comerford hopes to increase Walmart’s outdoor offerings by forming partnerships with specialty brick-and-mortar retail stores, which will be able to sell inventory through Walmart’s site, similar to the model Amazon uses to. its retail platform. For competing online retailers like REI and Backcountry.com, Walmart’s new interest in high-end equipment could have ramifications as the big-box online retailer siphons off sales. For brick-and-mortar stores that make up for weaker foot traffic by selling inventory through Walmart, the platform could be a blessing, but it could be a blow to those who choose not to register, as it brings more. sales of hardware online and away from the physical retail environment.

Does that mean Moosejaw itself could be on the verge of extinction? Not yet. Comerford says the new platform is a win-win solution, using Moosejaw’s expertise to enhance the Walmart shopping experience while using Walmart’s huge audience to create brand recognition for Moosejaw and send more customers at its destination. “We’re still the same Moosejaw we were before,” Comerford says. “Just supercharged by investment and scale. ”

Few music studios can conjure the envy and awe of equipment fetishists that Legowelt can. The Dutch electronic musician’s space – aptly titled the North Sea Institute for the Overmind – is more of a sanctuary for synthesizers than a studio.

Synthesizers across the spectrum, large and small, analog and digital, mono and polyphonic, have taken up residence in the Legowelt hut. And it’s fair to say that the synth maestro makes the most of what he has, producing record after record of electro, italo, new age and house for some of the biggest electronic music labels.

It is also well known that he is rather generous in sharing his wealth of knowledge with other musicians. Over the years, Legowelt has released digital drum machines and sample packs, but the real highlights have to be the synth reviews found on their website. As the North Sea Institute page states, “Here are some articles on synthesizers / writing stuff that I have or had in the studio. Most with sound demonstrations and HOT images.

Sauce, right? It’s even better: 64 different machines are featured on the site, meaning you can scroll, listen and read your way to your perfect studio setup, from vintage samplers to Roland Jupiters and Minimoogs. Think Vintagesynth.com, but with that weird and delicious Legowelt touch. Check it out here.

2017 is shaping up to be the year of Ikea. His products continue to beautify and become more functional, he made waves with the release of his first bike, he acquired the Taskrabbit on-demand handyman service, and now its long-awaited and much-publicized collaboration with contemporary Danish design studio Hay is officially launched.

Dubbed Ypperlig, Swedish for “excellent,” the series is made up of modern, functional basics – an antidote to the utilitarian starter pieces found in apartments around the world. The collection, made up of over 60 items, includes stripped-down wood furniture with clean, stained ash veneer, injection-molded chairs (read: no assembly!) But it’s the updated Frakta shopping bag that will be probably a bestseller. Check out the full collection here and find five minimal, inexpensive pieces to inject new energy into tired spaces below.
