A shopper found ‘pleasant surprises’ swapping groceries for Tesco’s budget brands

As the cost of living crisis hits families hard and many have chosen to ‘heat or eat’, Manchester Evening News’ Emma Gill decided to test supermarket brands to see which products, if any, were worth worth replacing with brand name groceries. .

Emma headed to supermarket giant Tesco with the aim of stocking up on a full grocery store that would feed a family of four for the week, but only with food from Tesco’s budget brands, to see where savings could be made .

She started by comparing the appearance and branding of budget items with regular products.

Emma said: “Unlike other budget ranges – which tend to have nothing more than words and if you’re lucky an image on an otherwise plain white label – Tesco merges with the rest of its products It’s pretty much been that way since the removal of its former “Everyday Value” brand and while so, it might make items harder to find, if you have kids or other half who might turn their noses up. cheaper brands, chances are they won’t notice.”

More importantly, Emma set out to compare the taste and prices of the items with what she would usually buy.

She said: “There’s plenty to cook substantial meals in its budget ranges, helped by Aldi price matches on some meats and fruit and its cheap frozen vegetables like chips, like the 900g bag of bouquets of broccoli and cauliflower for 80p and the 900g Bag of Grower’s Harvest Garden Peas for just 55p.

“There were a lot of things we hadn’t tried before and it was like taking a trip back to the 80’s with some of the economy stuff – refreshing with the prices as well as the food. With our Chicken Kievs, 1, £65 for two, and potato croquettes, just 61p for 700g, all we needed was the Blockbusters theme tune and I would have been there eating my after school tea and brooding about what was next.

“And some of them were a blast from the past too. I think I was a little too excited about Angel Delight, 49p a pack, because the reaction from my kids was pure disappointment – followed of” I don’t “I don’t like the texture”. Who are they ?”

But she managed to appease her kids with plenty of cheap brand name sweet items.

She said: “There were lots of sweets they liked in Tesco’s Ms Molly range, with everything from a platter of flapjack and ice cream roll, to milk lollies and trifles. She didn’t may not have Mr. Kipling’s status, but I’ll take Ms. Molly’s prices over hers any day of the week.

“The flapjack platter, for example, was just 80p for 360g. It’s less than half the price of Tesco’s £2 pack of flapjack bites (two for £3 with Clubcard) and there’s no really no trouble cutting it yourself.”

Emma then moved on from desserts and delicacies to savory meals.

“Speaking of chips, I would challenge anyone to make tastier fish, chips and peas for less. With Hearty Food Co’s 1.5kg straight cut for 90p, Growers Harvest British mushy peas 300g for 25p and the Hearty Food Co four 600g breaded fish fillets for £2.39, the meal was around 90p a head.

“The whole Willow Farm chicken, a bargain at £2.89, was enough for a Sunday dinner, and we still had some meat left to stick in a curry afterwards.”

However, not all of the cheap branded products were a hit, and her children managed to sniff out some of the cheaper items.

Emma said: “My kids who love Heinz beans quickly spotted the Stockwell & Co 22p Baked Beans and there’s nothing smart about throwing away something they won’t eat. I couldn’t even get them. persuaded to try a chicken batter butty and while it’s not something I’ve eaten since, oh here we go again with the 80s, it was actually OK.

“And there were some nice surprises too – like Stockwell & Co tea bags, at just 55p for £60, less than half of what you’d pay for Tetley or a similar brand.”
