What is the FSA?

“An FSA is an employer-sponsored benefit that allows employees to set aside

How does FSA work?

  • Increase in FSA due date deferral (also called deferral): An authorized carryover of up to all unused FSA funds, if the employer authorizes it, for FSA plan years ending in 2020 or 2021.   • Extended FSA grace period (if authorized by employer): CAA gives employers the option to extend the grace period up to 12 months after the end of the plan year (for a typical plan year from November 1 to December 31, i.e. from March 15 to December 31 of the following year). It is important to note that this temporary change only affects plan years ending in 2020 or 2021, after which the grace period will again be limited to a maximum of two and a half months.
  • Extended use of FSA for terminated employees (if authorized by employer): The CAA also allows employers to temporarily extend the use of the FSA for laid-off employees until the end of the 2020 or 2021 plan year if they choose.
